Things to come!

With a midweek holiday, things were pretty quiet on the internship front. (Full disclosure: I spent most of last week in North Carolina. It was as hot and miserable as DC.) The ICN is moving forward; the widespread launch for all employees may happen by mid August!

Last Monday I had my MPA site visit with Professor Carl Stenberg. Considering a third of the DC area was without power, things went pretty smoothly. The only real hitch of the day was the red tape required for Professor Stenberg to get into the building. Three ID checks is both impressive and annoying. I’m curious if it’s worse getting into the Treasury Department….

This week will be filled with conferences. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I will be at AdaCamp, a “preconference” looking at the role and participation of women in open technology and culture. I’ve given up trying to explain it beyond that. I defer to the description from their site:

“It is focused on increasing women’s participation in open technology and culture. AdaCamp brings together people to build community, discuss issues women have in common across open technology and culture fields, and find ways to address them. Open technology and culture includes open source software, Wikipedia and other wiki projects, open data, open government, fan/remix culture, open libraries, and more. Attendance is by invitation and attendees are selected from qualified applicants through an open invitation process. Attendance is open to people of all genders.”

How cool is that?

This leads into Wikimania, the annual international Wikimedia conference, which is held DC this year! There will be some great sessions, but I am especially interested in the discussions on technology in government! Here is a complete schedule of events: http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schedule

Next week, I promise a full report!
