Hello and welcome!

Welcome to what I hope will be a stimulating view of the Speaker’s Office in the North Carolina General Assembly.  As an MPA student from UNC’s School of Government, I was given the opportunity to work in the office of Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, for the summer.  Courtesy of UNC’s MPA program and with the blessing of my boss, Charles Thomas, I hope to chronicle my experience through this blog throughout the summer.

As a former staff writer for The Daily Tar Heel, I covered the legislature during the ’05 and ’06 sessions but never quite got the insider’s perspective.  Through my work for the Speaker, I am hoping to learn about the inner workings of a political office, how certain bills come about and are passed, and whether the process really works or not.

While I hope to share with you many of the experiences and insights I gain along the way, I won’t be able to share everything.  Courtesy of a few confidentiality laws governing my work, some of the information I am privy to and projects I am working on won’t make it into this blog.

So expect some stories from the session, some personal trials and triumphs, as well as the occasional observation about life at the legislature.

Check back every Friday to read what is happening with this Heel on the Hill – well, North Carolina’s Capitol Hill.
