I started my summer internship in the Person County Manager’s Office this week. All of the County employees warmly welcomed me and made me feel right at home. I jumped in on my first day with an extended Commissioners meeting, including a couple of closed sessions. In three hours I learned about choosing a county health insurance plan, adopting zoning ordinances, maintaining County/ Council of Governments relations, and clearly presenting budget recommendations. Assistant County Manager, Sybil Tate, walked me around downtown Roxboro where I met several County and City employees in the Kirby Theater, Tax Office, Register of Deeds Office, and the library. We also visited the local café, Tricia’s—if you’re ever in Roxboro, I recommend stopping by for a delicious piece of homemade pound cake!

I’m looking forward to the rest of my Professional Work Experience in Person County because there are many interesting projects planned for me in the areas of economic development, human resources management, and budgeting, among others.  I’m excited to use the tools gained during my first year in the MPA program in a practical setting. If this week is any indication of the rest of my experience, it will certainly be a great one.

Keep reading on Fridays for adventures in Person County!
